How this calculator works
The grout gap is the detail most tile calculators skip. A 600 × 600 tile with a 2 mm joint actually occupies 602 × 602 mm of floor, and across a large room that difference is worth several tiles.
- Effective tile area = (tile length + grout gap) × (tile width + grout gap).
- Tiles = floor area ÷ effective tile area.
- Wastage is added on top — 10% is normal, and worth raising for diagonal layouts, small rooms or rooms with many cuts.
- Boxes are rounded up, because tile shops sell full boxes and dye lots differ between batches.
- Skirting is calculated from the room perimeter less door openings, then converted to pieces cut from full tiles.
Order the whole job in one delivery. Tiles from a later batch rarely match on shade, and a room finished from two dye lots is visible under raking light.
